This month we return to the National Theatre for something extraordinary: a major new production of Peter Shaffer’s Amadeus with twenty of our players onstage, right at the heart of the action. With over 60 performances between October and March, and a live broadcast to cinemas across the globe, this is the highest profile project Southbank Sinfonia has ever undertaken, already propelling our reputation far and wide:

“The musicians are the backbone of the performance, scattering and re-forming throughout, like some sort of murmuration of musically gifted starlings.” The Times

“The most striking aspect of the evening is that the production harnesses Southbank Sinfonia… the ensemble of musicians forms an integral part of the action.” The Telegraph

This is a landmark production even by the National Theatre’s bold standards. There is no known precedent for staging a play with 20 musicians and indeed, this iconic play all about music has never been staged with an orchestra before. Given how much the production promises to do both for our players and for Southbank Sinfonia’s profile generally, we are running a campaign to help raise funds to bring our exciting new version of Amadeus to life.

Across the course of the run, the production will generate over £200,000 in fees for players from Southbank Sinfonia: an invaluable financial footing for them in addition to the unrivalled artistic rewards that the project promises. We have therefore pledged to raise £35,000 in support of the project, largely intended to cover the player fees for the highly creative and intensive rehearsal period.

Your support at any level would help us greatly, and in return, we will offer further opportunities for you to get closer to the production, including behind-the-scenes insights and updates from the players on a journey like no other.

For those able to make a donation of £1,000 or more, we warmly invite you to join us at an exclusive pre-show reception at the National Theatre on Thursday 29 November to celebrate what we have achieved together and thank you for your support. The first 20 supporters to make such a donation will also have access to purchase a pair of tickets for that evening’s sold-out performance.

If you would be interested in getting further involved as a Major Supporter, including backstage access and opportunities to meet the cast and creative team, we would be delighted to tell you more.
