RUSH HOUR #7: CHAMBER SYMPHONY
ST JOHN’S WATERLOO

Bryce Dessner Aheym
Osvaldo Golijov Last Round
John Adams Chamber Symphony

Holly Mathieson conductor

When performing chamber music there is nowhere to hide, and none more so than in John Adams’ propulsive Chamber Symphony. A cowbell thuds out the beat as the music gets underway, providing the foundations around which 14 other musicians rhythmically duck and weave. Part-inspired by the hyperactive soundtracks of 1950s cartoons, the Chamber Symphony feels caffeine-infused as it energetically surges forwards. Dessner’s Aheym transforms the string quartet into a fierce, rhythmic contraption, while Golijov pits two string armies against each other in a Tango duel.
