RUSH HOUR #5: CHAMBERS
ST JOHN’S WATERLOO
Alec Roth String Quartet No.2
Caroline Shaw Entr’acte
David Bruce Steampunk
As the creativity of composers melds with new trends, technologies and techniques, contemporary chamber works probe musical boundaries. In turn, this poses a question: how might the concert hall adapt to stage these works more powerfully?
As St John’s Waterloo reconfigures to suit the mood and scale of the music, David Bruce takes the intricate plumbing of the French horn and the elaborate, mechanical keys of the bassoon, clarinet and oboe to create a steampunk octet. Kanye West collaborator Caroline Shaw’s Entr’acte is fuelled by subtle shifts in rhythmic atmosphere, while from Alec Roth comes a quartet that bounces between pulsing and unwinding dance melodies.
