RUSH HOUR #13: ELGAR CELLO CONCERTO
ST JOHN’S WATERLOO
THE DEREK BUTLER CONCERTO SERIES
Rossini Introduction, Theme and Variations
Elgar Cello Concerto
Simon Over conductor
Jordi Juan-Perez clarinet
Philip Higham cello
Ahead of our Italian travels, we preview a selection of music to be performed at the Anghiari Festival including Elgar’s elegiac Cello Concerto. Written in the aftermath of the First World War, its heart-rending themes are reflective of a lost world. Richly lyical and deeply moving, the music provides a poignant insight into the feelings of one of Britain’s greatest composers. Performing the work is Philip Higham, one of the most prominent young cellists from the UK, who has previously appeared as soloist with the Philharmonia, Hallé, Royal Northern Sinfonia and Bournemouth Symphony Orchestras.
Umberto Clerici is unwell and unable to perform in this concert, as advertised. We are incredibly grateful to Philip Higham for stepping in at short notice.
