RUSH HOUR #8: SHOSTAKOVICH CELLO CONCERTO
ST JOHN’S WATERLOO
THE DEREK BUTLER CONCERTO SERIES
James MacMillan Symphony No.2
Shostakovich Cello Concerto No.1
Jessica Cottis conductor
Mathieu Foubert cello
James MacMillan’s Second Symphony is music with a short fuse perilously close to being lit. Contrasting ideas interact and compete, gradually being whipped up to an emphatic climax bluntly punctuated by militaristic bursts and huge, shuddering chords. Witty, sardonic and often frantically agitated, Shostakovich’s brooding Cello Concerto No.1 meanwhile places huge demands of virtuosity on its soloist, 2016 orchestra member Mathieu Foubert.
British-Australian conductor Jessica Cottis has been hailed in the press as “one to watch”, and in 2016 will also conduct the BBC Symphony Orchestra, Sydney Symphony and at the Royal Opera House.
