Young Mahler: Symphony No.1

YOUNG MAHLER: SYMPHONY NO.1
THE BRIDGE THEATRE, LONDON

Mahler (arr. Iain Farrington) Symphony No.1

Leo Geyer conductor
Jamie Parker, Maggie Service and Benedict Salter actors

In a lunchtime performance that marks the beginning of a new association with The Bridge, our musicians awaken the dramatic spirit of classical music.

Mahler’s symphonies are truly theatrical in scale, calling upon huge orchestral forces to bring their epic statements to life, yet still seem to speak personally to each listener. Here, that intimacy is amplified in Iain Farrington’s ingenious arrangement for 15 musicians, where every player becomes a soloist and hidden aspects of the score are revealed as never before.

As the symphony is opened up, so is Mahler’s psyche: among the musicians, actors will voice the influences that shaped the young composer’s first symphonic steps, painting an impressionistic portrait of an artist on the cusp of greatness.

We are thrilled to welcome a trio of actors that includes Jamie Parker, winner of the 2017 Olivier Award for Best Actor (Harry Potter and the Cursed Child; The History Boys).

This daytime event can be complemented with lunch in The Bridge’s bar – a quick work break with a signature St. JOHN sandwich or a more lingering afternoon of small plates in our light-filled foyer.
