RUSH HOUR #11: SOHO
ST JOHN’S WATERLOO
Guy Barker A Soho Symphony
Guy Barker conductor
With an introduction written by John Sessions and read by Steve Furst
Soho: the beating heart of the West End and for decades the stage for a night to remember. A Soho Symphony is a tale of boy meets girl, but one where destiny is delayed. We wander the streets for a day, taking in multiple espressos, murky historical tales, music clubs for the alcoholically adventurous, fuzzy heads, jazz ghosts, groupies and ‘music to disrobe by’. With a new dawn comes clarity of thought, but is it all too late?
Twice nominated for the Mercury Prize and today one of the world’s leading jazz trumpeters and composers, Guy Barker expertly blends classical, jazz, blues and more to paint a portrait of the life and soul of London. Hear a brief preview of the symphony here.
Ahead of the concert, tune in to BBC Radio 3′s In Tune to hear Guy Barker and Southbank Sinfonia musicians talk to Sean Rafferty about A Soho Symphony. They will also perform a selection of chamber music live in the studio from approximately 6.00pm on Wednesday 8 June.
