CHAMBER MUSIC AT THE ROYAL OPERA
CRUSH ROOM, ROYAL OPERA HOUSE
Britten Three Divertimenti
Szymanowski String Quartet No.1
Three twentieth century composers take utterly different starting points and approaches to chamber works in this lunchtime concert. In his Three Divertimenti for string quartet, a youthful Britten offers plenty of fun and games. The finale constantly buzzes with speed and energy as pizzicato pings and gutsy slides show the composer as a musical athlete.
From Szymanowski come rapid swings of mood, daring rhythms and melodic experimentation. Martinů, meanwhile, nostalgically looks back to his Bohemian homeland, but with the added twist of a musical tribute to Haydn.
