RUSH HOUR #4: EROICA
ST JOHN’S WATERLOO
CPE Bach Symphony in F major
Beethoven Symphony No.3 ‘Eroica’
Rebecca Miller conductor
Every so often, something revolutionary comes along that changes our understanding or way of life. Penicillin, the light bulb, even the iPhone: all had a profound impact on society. The same is true of Beethoven’s ‘Eroica’ which suddenly imbued the symphonic form with a new and gigantic message. Music could be more than just entertainment; music could be a huge artistic or philosophical statement. But there was a precedent for such radical musical ideas, something CPE Bach had in abundance.
Described by The Times as “a miracle of perpetual motion”, performances under Rebecca Miller’s baton fizz with energy and excitement.
