SOUTHBANK SINFONIA IN ALDEBURGH
JUBILEE HALL, ALDEBURGH

Schumann Cello Concerto
Mendelssohn Symphony No.1

Simon Over conductor
Zoé Saubat cello

Southbank Sinfonia returns to Aldeburgh’s Jubilee Hall for a lunchtime concert featuring a high-spirited symphony and an enigmatically beautiful concerto.

Mendelssohn was just 15 when he wrote his First Symphony. A true child prodigy, he took inspiration from classical greats like Mozart’s Symphony No.40 and Beethoven’s Fifth, but created something that shimmers with a youthful quality all of its own. Thrilling, muscular and vividly dramatic, it feels like a surging undercurrent of energy is propelling the music along.

Meanwhile, Schumann’s Cello Concerto is by turns poetic and stormy. At its heart lies a lyrical second movement, music that calls for incredible delicacy as well as virtuosity from soloist Zoé Saubat.
