Delius Complete incidental music to James Elroy Flecker’s ‘Hassan’
James Elroy Flecker, the son of Dean Close School’s first Headmaster, never lived to enjoy the success of a long-running London production of his play Hassan in 1923; he died of Tuberculosis in 1915.
Flecker’s fascination for the Orient – he worked for the Consular Service in the Middle East from 1910 – resulted in witty and colourful reworkings of old Turkish tales, set in ancient Baghdad.
Delius’ incidental music for this exotic romance was composed in 1920, for chamber orchestra and chorus. With titles such as The War Song of the Saracens, Chorus of Beggars and Dancing Girls, and The Song of the Muezzin at Sunset, it is music of great variety and melodic appeal.
In this performance, a narrative précis of Flecker’s play will accompany Delius’ score.

Southbank Sinfonia launches this year’s Waterloo Festival where the theme is ‘war and peace’. Amid the atrocities of war, art often flourishes. Few artists have shown greater defiance and strength in wartime than opera composer Richard Strauss. The Gestapo threatened to harm his Jewish grandchildren if he did not comply with Hitler’s wishes. He bravely continued to write the music he wanted, writing works of radiant optimism at the darkest hour, including the sextet from his opera Capriccio and his very last piece, the Duett-Concertino. The young stars of St John’s resident orchestra, Southbank Sinfonia, bring their own remarkable zeal to Strauss’ music and some of the great operas that he so loved.

Saturday 14 – Sunday 22 July 2012
Anghiari Festival, Tuscany, Italy
Join Southbank Sinfonia in the beautiful Tuscan hill-town of Anghiari for a programme packed with orchestral, choral, chamber and children’s concerts. Our return to Anghiari this year will be something of a milestone as we mark not only the tenth year of the festival, but also the tenth anniversary of Southbank Sinfonia – a double cause for celebration!
The festival provides a full and varied programme, which is currently taking shape. In the opening days, Soutbank Sinfonia are joined by Italian cellist Umberto Clerici and we present a concert performance of Rossini’s La Cenerentola in partnership with Bury Court Opera. Throughout the week our musicians will perform in stunning locations in and around Anghiari including the popular ‘Progressivo’; a mini-concert tour which winds its way through the picturesque backdrops the ancient town has to offer, as well as concerts featuring Vox Musica and Parliament Choir. We end the week in style with a gala concert on Saturday 21 July.
To register your interest and receive information on booking and accommodation please email Development Assistant Charlotte Castle at charlotte@southbanksinfonia.co.uk

LSO St Luke’s
In September 2002, an exciting new orchestra burst onto the scene. Giving graduates a much-needed springboard into the profession, Southbank Sinfonia was born and has since changed the lives of countless musicians now enjoying roles in leading orchestras nationwide and beyond.
We couldn’t have achieved this without our treasured supporters. In return, this October we are hosting a celebratory concert especially for those who donate to Southbank Sinfonia today or have made a significant contribution in our first ten years. This unique evening will feature performances with our partner organisations and some very special guests, looking back over a remarkable decade and ahead to our next adventures.
Further details including ticket prices will be sent to all supporters in April. Find out more about supporting the orchestra, and being in with an opportunity to attend our spectacular birthday party, by clicking here
