Auditions 2012
Southbank Sinfonia is Britain’s leading orchestral academy and orchestra of young professionals.

“The Southbank Sinfonia experience has helped me develop as a player. The variety of repertoire covered in just the first few months has enabled to me to explore a great deal of what the profession has to offer. This opportunity has been great preparation for my future career”
Simon Tong, trumpet, Southbank Sinfonia 9 (2011)
Applications for Southbank Sinfonia 2012 are now closed.
Information for Southbank Sinfonia 2013 recruitment will be posted Summer 2012.
The orchestra will assemble in late January 2012 and work together until October. The Southbank Sinfonia’s home is St John’s, Waterloo, in the heart of London’s Southbank performance centre. Players will experience an unrivalled range of performing and professional development opportunities, playing concerts; performing at festivals; and accompanying opera, ballet and theatre projects across many genres. Repertoire ranges from baroque to contemporary, with opportunities to work in both a full orchestral and chamber setting. Southbank Sinfonia is joined by many guest artists across the programme to coach and perform alongside the orchestra. Alongside its main season runs a varied education programme working closely with a number of schools, giving players experience coaching young musicians. Most performance opportunities are in London, but Southbank Sinfonia travels around Britain and, in July of each year, to Anghiari in Tuscany for a week-long festival.
The orchestra rehearse from Tuesday to Thursday, with performances throughout the week, including weekend engagements. Each player is supported by a bursary of £6,600 and players may supplement this income with teaching and any career developing performance opportunities.
International Applications
We are now able to process applications from international candidates. Applicants must fit the standard criteria, as well as:
- be available to attend audition in either London (United Kingdom), Sydney (Australia) or Dunedin (New Zealand). Candidates from the European Union will be expected to travel to London.
- be flexible in regards to audition date. This will be confirmed after applications have been processed. Once dates are fixed for the given locations, they are non-negotiable.
International auditions need to occur prior to the London auditions and so excerpts will be emailed out as soon as possible after the application date to ensure an appropriate preparation period.
International applicants who are unable to travel to Sydney/Dunedin/London will be dealt with on a case-by-case basis.
