William Duncombe


William began his studies at Birmingham Conservatoire under the tuition of Michael Harris and Timothy Lines. Following this he was awarded a scholarship to the Royal College of Music and was also generously supported by the Countess of Munster, the Musicians Benevolent Fund and the Martin Musical Scholarship Fund. He was then accepted into the class of Pascal Moragues at the Paris Conservatoire. Whilst at these institutions William enjoyed great success in many internal and external competitions. He was the Winner of the Symphony Hall recital competition and was awarded the Musicians Union Bill Warman award for ‘most promising instrumentalist’ as well as being a finalist in the Yamaha European Scholarship Awards 2009 and woodwind finalist in the Royal Overseas League Music Competition 2009.

As a soloist William has given countless recitals throughout the United Kingdom and Europe, he was selected for the New London Orchestra ‘young performer series’, the Martin Musical Recital Series and gave recitals for the Musicians Benevolent Fund.

As an orchestral musician William has had the privilege of working with great orchestras, including EUYO, Britten Pears Orchestra, YMSO and performing under illustrious conductors such as Pierre Boulez, Bernard Haitink and Esa-Pekka Salonen. He has also participated in orchestral schemes with the LSO, Philharmonia and the CBSO. As a chamber musician William has worked with international soloists such as Peter Donohoe and Brigitte Engerer as well as members of the CBSO, performing works by Bartok and Stravinsky.

For the past two years William has spent each summer in France playing principal clarinet with Opera De Bauge and has also recently performed at London Fashion week. William has also participated in many Master classes, being one of four clarinettists selected from Europe to attend the Academie Musicale de Villecroze in a week long performance course with soloist Paul Meyer and attended the International master class in Vitoria studying with Chi-Yu Mo.

William will be performing the Copland Clarinet Concerto with the Southbank Sinfonia conducted by Rebecca Miller
