Barnaby Adams

For three years Barnaby was the Orchestra Manager at Southbank Sinfonia, having finished his MSci degree in Chemistry at Imperial College in 2007. Devoting any spare time to working as a freelance player during this period Barnaby made the switch to full-time viola playing in 2010. Most recently he has been studying privately with violinist Jennifer Nickson.

Before coming to London, Barnaby was Principal Viola of the Suffolk Youth Orchestra and completed three Snape Proms courses with the Britten-Pears Orchestra. During his time at Imperial College, Barnaby was Principal Viola of the University of London and Imperial College Symphony Orchestras, and the Imperial College String Ensemble with whom he performed the Telemann Viola Concerto and Bach’s Brandenburg Concerto no.6 as soloist.

Professional engagements include concerts with Southbank Sinfonia, Jersey Symphony Orchestra, Amadeus Orchestra, Orpheus Sinfonia, Cantandum and Bampton Classical Opera. Barnaby is a passionate chamber musician and is currently playing in a flute, harp & viola trio with SbS 8 flautist Kate Walter. Barnaby has previously been a member of the Trio Galbino formed with SbS Alumni players Eugene Lee and Gemma Wareham, and has worked with the Berkeley Ensemble.

Aside from musical life, Barnaby loves walking and appreciating the great outdoors, escaping London as often as possible to indulge in this. He also plays Badminton regularly and is an occasional cyclist.

Barnaby is delighted to be a member of Southbank Sinfonia and is very excited about life in the orchestra from a whole new perspective!
