Rebecca Hopkin

Rebecca began her musical studies at Chetham’s School of Music in Manchester where she studied with Roger Bigley, Scott Dickinson and Mark Knight. Whilst at Chetham’s she was also principal viola of the National Youth Symphonia and 3rd chair in the National Youth Orchestra’s viola section.

After completing her 4 years at Chetham’s school of music, she was offered a scholarship at the Royal Academy of Music where she graduated with a BMUS and LRAM. Whilst she was at the Academy she studied with Yuko Inoue and Matthew Souter, received solo master classes with distinguished musicians such as Tomas Riebel, Phillip Dukes, Hartmut Rohde and Tatjana Masurenko, and chamber music coaching with members of the Takacs Quartet, Lindsay Quartet, Leopold Trio, Alberni Quartet, Skampa Quartet and Siegnund Nissel of the Amadeus Quartet.

During her studies Rebecca has had the opportunity of playing under the baton of Sir Colin Davis, Yan Pascal Tortelier and Simon Rattle to name but a few, and has performed in great venues such as the Royal Albert Hall, Wigmore Hall and St John’s Smith Square.

In the fall semester of 2005 Rebecca studied at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York, on the exchange programme with the Academy. She then returned to Eastman on a scholarship in 2007 to study for her Masters Degree in Performance and Literature with George Taylor.

Teaching-wise Rebecca has been the viola tutor for the National Children’s Chamber Orchestra of Great Britain and also for the Young Musician’s Symphony Orchestra on the Musicale summer festival.

She has also been involved in many composers’ projects including the world premieres of two of Peter Maxwell Davies’ works. Rebecca is very interested in modern compositions for the viola including contemporary and jazz, and has played for many film and commercial recordings.
