Fraser MacAulay

Fraser studied Zoology at Durham University before deciding to pursue a career as an oboist. Following postgraduate studies under Stephane Rancourt at the RSAMD he was offered a scholarship to study at the Royal College of Music with Christopher Cowie and Gareth Hulse. During his time at the RCM he was awarded the Earl of Dalhousie Prize, the Lady Barbirolli Oboe Prize and was appointed a Leverhulme Trust Orchestral Mentor.

Fraser is currently on trial for the position of Sub-Principal Oboe with the London Symphony Orchestra and has freelanced with the BBC National Orchestra of Wales, BBC Symphony Orchestra, BBC Philharmonic and the Royal Scottish National Orchestra. In 2007, he was invited to play principal oboe with the Britten-Pears Orchestra for their concert season and was the only oboist selected to take part in the London Philharmonic Orchestra’s “Future Firsts” apprenticeship scheme in 2008/2009.

In January 2009 he made his Royal Festival Hall debut with pianist Ivana Gavrić in a recital supported by the Philharmonia and the Martin Musical Trust Fund. Further engagements with Ivana have included the Lansdowne Club in London as well as Reading University and St James’ Piccadilly. A keen chamber musician, Fraser is also oboist with the quintet ‘Amici Winds’, with whom he has toured extensively as part of Yehudi Menuhin’s ‘Live Music Now!’ scheme.
